Gallery 6
St. Thomas, St. Maarten, & San Juan
About the images in this gallery: all the images in these galleries were scanned  from

original photographs taken on a seven day cruise of the islands in March of 1989.  All were
exposed on Kodak Ektar 35MM color print film, 125 ASA & 25 ASA. No digital manipulations
were made on these images. All photos were taken hand-held. The enlarged images are about
70 KB each and will display at about 820x600 pixels.

Magen's Bay on scenic St. Thomas, as viewed from the top of the island, is considered
to be one of the ten most beautiful beaches  in the world. The island's many beaches, such
as the one seen above and below, offer year-round sunshine, providing for ideal swimming and
snorkeling conditions. The photo to the  right was taken through a locked gate at the
end of an alley. This rather chaotic view of the city shows that it is a mix of the modern
and the not-so-modern. This colorful array  of merchandise was on display at the pier
on St. Maarten. To the right is the rather surreal juxtaposition of a commercial airliner
appearing to land on a picturesque  tropical beach. These next two photos offer
additional views of the pier first seen covered with Hard Rock T-shirts above. This next view,
from a scenic lookout on the island, shows the  red tile roofs of the city and the boat-
spotted bay beyond. A picture perfect beach scene is marred only by the crane visible in
the background. The final four shots in  this gallery were taken in San Juan,
Puerto Rico, with very little available light. The photo to the left, of a cruise ship in port,
is a personal favorite. The final two images,   showing the lights of the city, were
taken from the balcony of an empty hotel room -- thanks to the help of a cooperative maid.
